Epidemiology of Obesity and Premature Death

Overweight and obesity are the fifth leading cause of global death (World Health Organization, 2011g, p.1).
This generation is the first in history to see a shorter life expectancy than the past (Carmona, 2004; Office of the Surgeon General, 2004, p. 2).
Socioeconomic factors are associated with obesity.
Healthcare professionals, politicians and layman communities are questioning what strategies to implement to eradicate the obesity pandemic (Schaub and Marian, 2011, p. 553).
Food corporations are linked to obesity; these corporations are ignoring “Call to Action” requests from U.S. Surgeon Generals and United Nation leaders in eradicating obesity,
but continue with sleight of name games while it costs society billions (Young and Nestle, 2007, p. 245).
This brief examines the epidemiology of obesity within the international, national, and local levels and its association with fast food policies, morbidities, and premature death;
resources at the national and local levels; and descriptions of distinct roles at the primary, secondary, and tertiary degrees of obesity deterrence for the individual, families,
and communities impacted by obesity.
